New Beginnings

As I write this first post my house is filled with boxes. It is another week before we move to take up residence at Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church, Ellicott City. Times of transition are both exhilarating and exhausting!

During my first few weeks in the pulpit I'd like to share some thoughts from the Old Testament Books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Israel had been sent into exile in Babylon. The Persians came to power, and against all expectation, the people of God were given a chance to return to their homelands, rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore the temple.  New beginnings indeed!

It is fascinating to observe what things they thought were important for the life of their community. They sought God through worship. They listened afresh for God's Word. They worked hard. They looked out for each other. They faced opposition. They had to rethink some of their relationships. They made sure everybody, man, woman and child was involved. Certainly food for thought for a pastor about to begin a new calling!

September 7, 2014, as we gather around a table laid with bread and wine, I want to begin talking about 'New Beginnings' and take a look at Ezra 1:1-5. Over the next few weeks I'll be taking the theme "I believe..." and hope to share some of the concepts that I have found important in my own spiritual journey. Hopefully it will give the congregation a chance to get to know me and the things I aspire to as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament (or as we are currently referred to in the PC(USA) a 'Teaching Elder').

I have to say I am excited to become a part of the Mount Hebron community. They have prepared a wonderful place for us to live. They have already welcomed me and lifted me up in their prayers. If you are looking for a church ... or simply curious to know more about the Christian faith, then come and join us at 10:00 a.m. Sunday September 7th! New beginnings :-)
